Moreh June 20 (NENA): Two jawans of Manipur Rifles (MR) were injured when unknown persons assaulted them at Tengnoupal district’s Moreh town bordering Myanmar on Tuesday.
The injured personnel belonging to 7th MR have been identified as Lamboi Kipgen, son of Doukap of Khenjang village in Churachandpur district and Th Tomba Singh of Andro in Imphal East. They were rushed to Moreh hospital for medical treatment following the assault.
A report said the MR personnel were assaulted by the unknown miscreants at Moreh Market this evening. The motive behind the attack could not be ascertained. The report said the assailants attacked the security personnel from the back at the market.
Two days ago, it was reported that personnel of 7th MR were alleged to have brutalised two civilian youths in the town allegedly without any provocation.
The Kuki Student’s Organisation,Moreh vehemently condemned the brutal assault of two innocent Kuki youths allegedly by personnel of 7th MR at Moreh and demanded suspension of the involved personnel.
The two youths named Georgie Lhungdim, son of Jamlet of Moreh Ward No.2 and Jamkhogin Haokip, son of Thongmang from Moreh Ward No.8 were brutally assaulted allegedly by personnel of 7th MR who were on civil dresses when the two were on an evening walk on June 18
The MR personnel, who were drunk, even pulled out their service weapons and threatened to kill the duo inside the MR post temporarily put up at DI parking, Moreh evening bazar, according to the student body.
“Their hands were tied behind backs and tortured and thrashed them mercilessly by the personnel posted there. The youths were then fired upon with empty cartridges accusing them of being members of an underground organisation,” Kuki Student’s Organisation (KSO) had claimed in a statement.
The two were seriously injured in the assault and were rushed to Moreh Hospital and later referred to Imphal for better treatment after their condition deteriorated.
The KSO, Moreh strongly denounced the act of the MR personnel and demanded immediate suspension of those who were involved in thrashing the two Kuki youths.
