Imphal, June 15: Suspected militants ambushed an Assam Rifles road opening foot patrol, killing one jawan and injuring another four at Chassad village under Chassad Police Station of Ukhrul district on Thursday.
One Assam Rifles jawan was reportedly killed and another four hurt in an ambush laid by militants at Chassad village of Ukhrul district around noon on Thursday, a report said.
The militants ambushed the 17 Assam Rifles team by exploding a powerful IED, killing one personnel and injuring four at the spot, the report said.
The injured jawan have been brought by a helicopter to Leimakhong Military Hospital here for medical treatment.
Ukhrul is located about 84 km north-east of the Manipur capital Imphal.
In 2015, two Assam Rifles jawans and a suspected militant died and one personnel of the paramilitary force was injured in a gun battle at Kamjong under Chassad police station of Kamjong sub-division near India-Myanmar border in Ukhrul.
A polling official and an Assam Rifles trooper were wounded in two bomb blasts by militants near the India-Myanmar border in Kamjong district in March 2017.
In another incident, a man was beaten to death allegedly by NSCN (IM) cadres last night at Ukhrul WTR office, sources said.
One Romeo, a resident of Khamasom under Ukhrul Police Station, was beaten to death by the outfit’s cadres around 11 pm.
The deceased is stated to be an employee of Transport Office, Ukhrul. It has been learnt that he was having a party with some women when the incident took place, the sources said.
