Former world champion and Manipur Boxer, Laishram Sarita Devi along with her mother Khomdonbi Devi were reportedly baptized by a Pastor at a small function held in her native village on Sunday.
According to reports, the area Pastor Ibomcha administered Baptism to Laishram Sarita Devi and her mother, while Rev S Thang Johnson, who serves as the Field Superintendent in the EBC’s Manipur Mission Field offered blessing prayer, to allowed the Holy Spirit to use them.
Church members who witnessed the baptism ceremony had described the event as a joyful occasion for the Christian communities who supported Sarita Devi, reports said, adding that Meiteis were the last set of people considered to be Christian in the state.
Laishram Sarita Devi is a national champion who was awarded Arjuna award by the central government for her achievements.
Sarita grabbed international headlines after she refused to accept the controversial “bronze medal” during the Incheon Asian Games in 2014.
Reports said that Sarita Devi and her mother were baptized at the Thoubal Khunou’s Meitei Evangelical Baptist Church. A month ago, news about Sarita Devi’s acceptance of Jesus Christ had spread and brought joy and hope within the Christian community of Manipur.
According to Census 2011, 13.38% of the total urban population in Manipur were Christians, while 64.39% were Hindus. Christian population is on the rise from around 19% in 1961 to more than 41% in 2011.
