Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said he was upset when he learned that the state was on the top list for bad lifestyle.
The Chief Minister was speaking on the launching programme of “Project Himna – MADAT (Mizoram Against Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco)” at Information and Public Relations Auditorium on Wednesday.
Projet Himna-MADAT was setup under New Economic Development Policy.
Chief Guest for the occasion, Lal Thanhawla launched Project Himna – MADAT and expressed the importance of this project and stated that Mizoram is the number one in various fields in the country.
Being the top in home to Cancer patients is something that is not to be proud of, this is because of our ignorance in consumption of our food and tobacco, he said.
He also said that there are many HIV and AIDS patients among the Mizos and this is because of abusive substance which eventually led to un-protected sex.
He further said that rape cases piling up under POSCO Act are the more reasons of implementing this project. It is joyful that MADAT is being created for eradicating abusive substances, he added.
In the process of uplifting the state economy, the general population is responsible and they have to be healthy to be able to execute the government’s plan.
Highlighting the recent success of ‘Catch them Young’ programme, the Chief Minister said this policy will also be effective like the ‘Catch them Young’ for instructing and educating the mass of cleanliness and awareness in abusive substances.
He also highlighted the importance of teacher’s role in policy making. Under NEDP, training will be provided fo teachers so that they may instruct and educate their students.
According to an official report, Project HIMNA – DAMAT is to be carried out in Aizawl district for observational purposes among selected schools.
The project is an initiatives jointly taken under the chairmanship of Aizawl District Commissioner, Health & Family Welfare, Education Department, Social Welfare Department and different non-profit organizations of Anti-Tobacco and Anti-Drug Abuse.
During the launching function, competition for choosing the best name for the project was also organized at different schools under Aizawl district.
